Note that this version of the book is not published by an established publisher. The print layout is very bad and makes the book completely unreadable. The page size is large, and the text is very small, making it extremely difficult to read. Additionally, there are blank lines in the middle of paragraphs which also disrupt the flow. I am sending the book back now and ordering a copy from a reputable publisher.

Ich glaube kaum, dass Hardys "Far from the madding crowd" abseits von Anglistik-Proseminaren noch gelesen wird. Schade - Hardys Erstling hat seine Qualitäten. Die Geschichte um die junge Batsheba, die landwirtschaftlichen Betrieb ihres Onkels erbt und sich im Laufe der Handlung mit gleich drei Heiratsanträgen konfrontiert sieht, könnte auch heute noch erzählt werden und wäre mit all der Romantik, den schicksalsvollen Zufällen und den schablonenhaften Charakteren womöglich ein Erfolg. Der Ton in diesem Roman ist noch leichter, die Schicksalsschläge noch nicht ganz so dramatisch und die Zufälle noch weniger an den Haaren herbeigezogen als z.B. in "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" oder "Jude the obscure". Allerdings sind dort auch die Charaktere stärker, emotionaler, lebendiger. Die psychologischen Einschätzungen des Erzählers was die Handlungs- und Denkweise weiblicher Wesen angeht, sind aus heutiger Sicht teilweise schwer erträglich, weil allzu generalisierend und typisierend. Wen das nicht abschreckt, der wird finden, dass sich die Lektüre lohnen kann. Die Schilderungen der Ernte, des Markthandels, des Schafescherens sind ausgesprochen schön und zu lernen gibt's wie immer auch etwas: dass die moralisch Aufrechten, die stetig Liebenden am Ende belohnt werden. Tja, ist eben Fiktion...

Ich fand dieses Buch anfangs eher gewöhnungsbedürftig, ob der schreibweise. Aber ab Seite 3 hat es mich nicht mehr losgelassen. Schöne Geschichte, fantastischer Stil und ein (scheinbar) gutes Abbild der damaligen Zeit!

Wunderschönes Buch!

Mit diesem Buch wurde Thomas Hardy - nach längerer Schriftstellerischer Tätigkeit - einem weiteren Publikum bekannt, sein Ruhm zu Lebzeiten durfte beginnen. Als Leserin mehrerer seine Bücher halte ich es allerdings nicht für das brillanteste, auch wenn es im literarischen Gesamtolymp natürlich dennoch ein grossartiges Werk ist.Zusammenfassend: mit diesem Buch schreibt Hardy eine herrliche Pastorale, als Leserin darf ich mich in der englischen Landschaft ergiessen, ich darf beim Schafe scheren im Licht in der Scheune baden, ich darf die Jahreszeiten an meiner Haut spüren und unübertrefflich die Szene, an der das ganze Dorf das Herannahen des Bienenschwarmes beobachtet und Hardy einen unter die Haut gehenden Vergleich zu dem, was sich vermutlich beim Urknall abgespielt hat, zieht. Top!Ebenso gelungen ist die Figur des Gabriel Oak - ein weiser Mann, der Schweigt wenn es zu Schweigen heist, bedächtig ist wenn er spricht, ehrlich ist wenn er liebt - und insgesamt sein Dasein nicht für den Mittelpunkt der Welt hält und damit viel Gutes tut. Potential bietet auch Farmer Boldwood, der eine Obsession entwickelt, die einem modernen Psychotherapeuten Freude bereiten könnte.Drei Sterne allerdings für die Zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen. Hier überzeugt Hardy in diesem Buch nicht, aber leider soll die Liebe dreier Männer zu Bathsheba Everdeen die zentrale Handlung ausmachen. Hier erscheint mir viel zu viel gekünstelt, zu schnell herbeigedichtet und einfach unglaubwürdig. Auch fehlt es bei den menschlichen Beziehungen an Esprit, was schade ist, denn in seinem Erstlingswerk "Under the Greenwood Tree" hat Hardy bewiesen, dass es ihm an menschlichem Witz und Sprachwitz nicht mangelt. Und dass die selbstbewusste Bathsheba, die immer und überall ihre Frau steht, ausgerechnet Troy auf die beschrieben Art und Weise geradezu verfällt - das mag sein, ist aber gar nicht überzeugend dargestellt.In der Summe also vier Sterne, hätte Hardy sich eisern an eine pastorale Landschaftsgeschichte gehalten wären es zweifelsohne fünf Sterne geworden, die Liebesgeschichte als zentrales Element ist ihm aber für mich leider nicht ganz gelungen.
